We’re going to have our “Craftalong” for my mom’s Feral Artists group next month – and this is going to get you started for what you need to do. And don’t forget to put it on your calendars – the craftalong will be on Saturday, December 14 at 1 pm pacific.
There are a million ways to make a website, but I’m going to show you one really popular way. We’re going to make a site using WordPress. My dad taught me how, and will be helping me teach you how.
To make a site, you need two things: A Hosting Account and a Domain Name.
The domain name is obvious … mine is craftbakemake.com. Yours might be AnyaIsTheBest.com, or something along those lines. I wouldn’t mind. Just sayin’.
You can register the domain when you buy a hosting account.
A web host is a company that will rent you space on their web servers (like a big computer in the sky) to put your webpages and pictures and files. There are lots of options, but we use Bluehost. The timing is GREAT, because they have a big Black Friday sale going on. If you decide to use Bluehost, please use my link – they’ll pay me a commission for people who sign up from my site.
Something that’s important to know: You pay annually. When you first sign up, they give a cheaper rate, and then when the account renews, it goes to full price. So when you register, we really recommend paying up front for three years!
With this sale, the BASIC plan can be as low as $2.65 per month – so if you pay for three years of hosting, it ends up costing $95.40. But we do suggest getting the Plus plan or the Choice plan (costs $160.20 for three years). Remember, though, that when they renew, it will jump to the higher price (basic at $7.99 per month, Plus at $10.99 per month, or Choice at $14.99 per month).
If you get the Plus or Choice hosting package, you can have a bunch of domain names (and full sites) all hosted on the same hosting account. But with the Basic one, you can only have one dot-com.
If you don’t know what your domain name will be, that’s OK – you can set up hosting and choose your domain name later.
Another fun thing about getting a domain name … you can also have personal email addresses! So you can have betty@AnyaIsTheBest.com.
We’re around and happy to help walk you through the process, or answer any questions you might have. You can email me and my dad at firstname.lastname@example.org!
